Building Capacities on Certification of Organic Agriculture in the Pacific
This project was IFAD-funded, implemented by IFOAM, in cooperation with ICEA. The project, focusing on developing regional Organic Agriculture standards, was a first step in IFAD’s long-term involvement in Organic Farming in the Pacific. The project ran from 2006 to 2008.
The project aimed at:
- analyzing the existing situation of Organic Agriculture and Fair Trade productions in the Pacific Islands Countries
- enabling producers of organic agriculture to obtain the certification of their products at a reduced and affordable cost
- institutionalizing certification capacity either private or governmental
- developing a set of regional standards for Organic Agriculture products
A series of workshops and trainings was conducted in the Pacific region under this project. Active participation and contribution from local governments and a close cooperation with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) were key in the successful implementation of the project.
