Sixth Symposium on Organic Agriculture
Under the coordination of the Association of Organic Agriculture Organizations (Ekolojik Tarım Organizasyonu (ETO)), the Symposium on Organic Agriculture has brought together organic sector researchers and practitioners from across Turkey since its inception in 1999.
In 2019, the sixth Symposium on Organic Agriculture will be held May 15 - 17, 2019 in Izmir, Turkey during the tenth Ecology (Ekoloji) Fair. İzmir has been known as the capital of organic agriculture in Turkey since the 1980s. Starting this year, the symposium will be open to international participants.
The symposium is an opportunity to meet members of the organic community and take part in the various activities performed at the Ecology Fair, a unique Turkish event for organic agriculture. Organizers of the Ecology Fair (IZFAŞ), the Aegean Exporters’ Associations, and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) have partnered up with ETO to organize this symposium
The Symposium aims to:
- Support scientific work and innovative research,
- Promote initiatives and cooperation,
- Discuss implemented research results with stakeholders,
- Disseminate and spread best practices widely,
- Share problems of the organic sector with decision-makers and researchers.
The symposium welcomes oral and poster presentations on the topic of organic agriculture. Submissions may cover sector best practices or state-of the-art methods. The symposium will also include two parallel sessions featuring oral presentations on organic plant and animal production as well as trade from invited speakers.
A panel discussion on Turkish "Food Communities" will allow participants from different backgrounds to exchange experiences, thereby creating a direct link between producers and shorter marketing channels for local agri-food products. Researchers and sector practitioners will interact with one another.
A session on promoting regional cooperation will be held on May 17, 2019. The session will focus primarily on Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. During this session, representatives from the FAO/REU, IFOAM - Organics International, and target countries will present the current state of affairs for organic agriculture across the globe and in respective countries. Regional structures in place for development of organic agriculture will be also discussed. This moderated discussion will aim to identify common priorities and major tools for promoting regional cooperation.
IFOAM - Organics International is pleased to announce that our Head of Capacity Development, pictured here, will attend the symposium on behalf of our organization. On May 17, 2019, he will speak on the following topics:
- Development of Organic Agriculture in the World and Organic 3.0
- IFOAM and its Role in Regional Development of Organic Agriculture
We look forward to your attendance at our sessions!
