IFOAM – Organics International at the COP of Action | Follow the live stream of our side-event on Farmers’ Day

IFOAM – Organics International is attending the COP22 climate talks, considered to be the COP of Action, where promises made at COP21 in Paris should start taking shape. We started our activities by calling on the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA) not to compromise food security and to place farmers at the center of climate action programs.

To date reducing emissions and enhancing carbon sequestration (removals) in the land sector are significant components in 77% of countries’ Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) mitigation contributions. A number of COP Parties as well as various organizations, including IFOAM – Organics International have also expressed their commitment to storing more carbon in soils by joining the 4p1000 Initiative. As the land sector is central to ensuring livelihood security, food sovereignty, and maintaining ecosystem integrity, actions taken here must ensure that land types with the highest climate resilience and biodiversity benefits such as old-growth forests and organic farms are prioritized.

Therefore, IFOAM – Organics International has signed The Climate-Land-Ambition-Rights Alliance’s submission to the APA on guidance for emissions and removals from land use. The submission calls for full transparency in reporting mitigation actions in the land sector.  This means, for example, we want to see gross emissions and gross removals reported on and accounted for separately to prevent actions such as continued deforestation being hidden by afforestation or ecosystem restoration elsewhere.

To further highlight the need for action, we will be hosting a side-event showing how agro-ecological approaches such as organic agriculture can contribute to a reduction of emissions, adaptation, preservation of genetic diversity, and improved public health and nutritional outcomes. It takes place on the COP22 Farmers’ Day  - 8 November, 16.45 - 18.15, and can be followed on live stream HERE
