Welcoming the New Chief Minister of Sikkim to the World of Organic!

The Indian state of Sikkim elected Shri Prem Singh Tamang to be its Chief Minister in May 2019. Sikkim is the first 100% organic state in the world. IFOAM – Organics International is pleased to welcome Sikkim’s new Chief Minister to the world of organic agriculture at BIOFACH India, 07 – 09 November in New Delhi.

IFOAM – Organics International will take the occasion of the inauguration of the international conference at Biofach India, 08 November, to honor the Chief Minister with an international award for “Forward-looking worldwide leadership through the implementation of pioneering organic policy highlighting how organic agriculture can be a solution to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.” This will be followed by a ceremony where a Memorandum of Understanding will be signed with international organizations interested in purchasing organic produce from the state of Sikkim through Sikkim-IFFCO Organics Limited.

Sikkim -  100% Organic
A recent report has shown that If we are to transition to sustainable food systems and tackle the many challenges facing our planet, including the climate crisis, we would be wise to embrace organic farming practices.

“Sikkim has shown how organic can be part of the solution with a policy that reaches beyond organic production and has proven to be truly transformational,” says Louise Luttikholt, Executive Director of IFOAM – Organics International, “We look to working on the next chapter of this success story with Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang.”

All farmland in Sikkim is certified organic. The transition has benefitted more than 66,000 farming families that practice organic and agroecological farming on more than 76,000 ha of land. Political commitment to support organic farming in Sikkim began in 2003 and was consolidated in 2010 with the design of the Sikkim Organic Mission. Full organic status was achieved in 2015.

Future Policy Award
For its noteworthy achievements, holistic approach and its respect for the Future Just Lawmaking Principles and Elements of Agroecology, Sikkim’s State Policy on Organic Farming (2004) and Sikkim Organic Mission (2010) were honored with the Future Policy Gold Award 2018, awarded by the World Future Council in partnership with the FAO and IFOAM – Organics International.

Sikkim is Transforming Agriculture
We look forward to accompanying Sikkim over the coming years as it builds on this tremendous success. Many countries and regions around the world have been inspired by Sikkim and would like to replicate this achievement.
