About 800 million people are hungry and another two billion people suffer from life threatening disease related to under nutrition and contamination of pesticides. At the same time, 1.4 billion people are overweight, and nearly half of our global food supply is wasted. Our food security campaign challenges policies that have led to this crisis, namely those subsidizing industrial food and agriculture systems.

Organic agriculture, by requiring few, low-cost inputs, enhancing local biodiversity, and providing a premium return on investment, is a system that empowers farmers to restore and uphold food security.

Organic agriculture can help achieve food security by: 

  • Increasing and stabilizing yields over the long-term, particularly on marginal lands.
  • Battling poverty through reducing debt and increasing returns on labor invested.
  • Providing diversified, healthy and nutritious food for farming families and communities. 

To increase the use of organic agriculture as a tool for food security, we call on:

  • Governments around the world to provide focused support and appropriate policies, including local market promotion for organic products by raising consumer awareness about nutritional benefits.
  • Donors and major development agencies, particularly the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to support and help accelerate the uptake of organic agriculture and other agroecological systems as they are crucial to ensuring healthy food for all in the 21st century.
  • Research and extension institutions to focus their work on agroecology and organic agriculture and to develop long-term solutions and promote and exchange successful techniques amongst farmers and technicians.

Global Goals 


The year 2016 sees the Sustainable Development Goals come into effect. They aim to end poverty, combat climate change as well as fight injustice and inequality by 2030. There are a total of 17 goals, of which the second is to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Zero Hunger Challenge

IFOAM - Organics International believes that hunger can be eliminated in our lifetimes. This is why we have joined governments and organizations in their efforts and commitments to support UN Zero Hunger Challenge. Find out more here.

Through targeted activities during the meeting of the Committee on World Food Security, the IFAD Governing Council, at the FAO Conference and related summits and conferences and by taking up the Zero Hunger Challenge, we are bring organic agriculture to the heart of the debate on how to nourish the world.  

According to the FAO, if just one-fourth of the food lost or wasted globally by the current food production system could be saved, it would be enough to nourish the over 800 million hungry people in the world. Read more in our factsheet Zero Hunger Challenge.
