Himalayan Agroecology Initiative gets the ball rolling!

Recently the Himalayan Agroecology Initiative has gained momentum as key stakeholders, including high-level Indian and Nepali government officials, and academic and civil society leaders, expressed their support for this crucial endeavour and a successful kickoff workshop was held at the UN House in New Delhi, India.

The Himalayan Agroecology Initiative is a multi-stakeholder initiative focusing on the development of a roadmap for sustainable food systems in India, Nepal, and Bhutan, to strengthen the capacities of farmers, farmer-producer organizations, and other key players so that they can improve the resilience of their livelihoods against increasing climate impacts and degrading natural resources and better benefit from government policies that support sustainable agriculture such as organic and natural farming.

Through close collaboration with governments in the region and with support from a broad group of stakeholders reunited in the Agroecology Himalaya Task Force, the World Future Council and IFOAM – Organics International together with the India offices of Alliance Bioversity International-CIAT and UNDP, LI-BIRD and Tarayana Foundation are proud to facilitate the initiative.

The Himalayan Agroecology Initiative contributes to the Indo-German Lighthouse Initiative on Agroecology and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and is financed by the Special Initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems” of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which both are core partners. This timely effort builds on past common achievements, such as the Future Policy Award on Scaling up Agroecology 2018, which we celebrated in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the high-level event “Scaling up Agroecology in the Himalayas Together” we organized together with BMZ in 2021.
