A pioneer of sustainable agriculture and advocate for organic farming in the Philippines and beyond
It is with deep sadness that we at IFOAM – Organics International extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Mr. Nicanor Perlas, a visionary leader whose pioneering work transformed agriculture in the Philippines and inspired organic movements around the world.
Born in 1950 in the Philippines, Perlas graduated with highest honours in agriculture from Xavier University, and went on to become a powerful advocate for ecological and people-centred farming systems.
Through his founding of the Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, Perlas played a key role in shifting Philippine agriculture away from chemical dependence toward more sustainable practices. He led nationwide efforts to train and support farmers, delivering technical assistance across 23 provinces. His leadership helped build the foundations of organic and ecological farming in the country.
He can be considered the godfather of the organic movement not only in the Philippines, but also as an inspiration and motivation far beyond, across Asia. With his wisdom, initiative, and influence, he provided the framework for organic to prosper. His legacy shall and will continue to enlighten and energise us.

As a member of the government’s Pesticides Technical Advisory Committee, Perlas was instrumental in the banning of 32 highly toxic pesticides. He also influenced major public investment in sustainable alternatives: his advocacy helped channel over ₱760 million (approximately 11 million Euros) into the country’s Integrated Pest Management program. This program trained more than 100,000 farmers, empowering them to adopt safer, more resilient agricultural practices.
Perlas continued to support farmers through his work with the Center for Alternative Development Initiatives (CADI), helping rural communities transition to organic systems rooted in biodiversity, local knowledge, and social justice.
While his work in agriculture was foundational, Perlas also contributed to global and national sustainability efforts. He was part of the Philippine NGO delegation to the 1992 Earth Summit and later co-chaired the Philippine Council for Sustainable Development, where he helped shape and implement Philippine Agenda 21. He also served on Mikhail Gorbachev’s Commission on Globalisation.
In recognition of his achievements, Perlas received the United Nations Global 500 Award, the TOFIL Award for Outstanding Filipinos, and the Right Livelihood Award (also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”) in 2003.
Nicanor Perlas leaves behind a legacy of ecological integrity, courageous leadership, and unwavering commitment to the empowerment of farmers and communities. His work will continue to inspire generations working toward a just, sustainable, and organic future.
