IFOAM – Organics International is proud to announce the release of a new learning guide designed to help governments and advocates develop policies that support family farmers through agroecology and organic agriculture. Developed in collaboration with the Family Farming Engagement Team in the Partnership and UN Collaborations Division (PSU) and other partners, this resource offers practical tools, policy options, and real-world examples to foster sustainable farming systems and resilient rural communities.
Drawing on successful case studies from around the globe, the guide outlines how governments can create enabling environments that strengthen the role of family farmers—facilitating their integration into value chains, boosting food system resilience, and promoting inclusive rural development.
This publication directly contributes to the implementation of the UN Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF) Global Action Plan, with a particular focus on Pillars 1 and 7, and supports Pillars 4, 5, and 6. It is a valuable step toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and advancing the Right to Adequate Food.
The UNDFF’s Global Action Plan presents a coordinated roadmap to support family farmers through seven interconnected pillars of action. These pillars call for context-specific, inclusive approaches—from local to global levels—that reflect the rich diversity of family farmers worldwide. At the heart of this framework is a commitment to placing family farmers at the center, ensuring all actions are developed through participatory, bottom-up processes.
This resource is a step forward in strengthening inclusive policies and scaling up sustainable agricultural practices that prioritise food security, biodiversity, and rural livelihoods.
